As current events progress to a potential climax, it seems possible that future history books - if any are to be written, let alone printed and read - will record that the Chagos Islands were the starting point of the Third World War.
Another interesting article...and another that I had not read about...maybe I missed it but still, never heard of this. Cannot say I am shocked or even surprised, I am too old for that. Thanks
I was on a cruise ship sailing in the Indial Ocean on the way to Singapore. We were supposed to have a day at sea. The Captain informed that we would have a speacial treat of stopping at Diego Garcia for few hours. Passengers, mostly American, would have a complimentary bus tour to the military base. I went for a walk in the harbor area. There were bar huts with girls for serving the military, some seemed very young. Very sad, must have been beautiful island and now covered with concrete. We figured that some of the passengers must have been visiting the base 'in cognito'. Could not figure out who, nobody disembarked. This was around 1990 -1993.
I learned in the Seychelles that the 'first choise' for the base had been Aldabra world's 2nd largest coral atoll. Since 1982 Aldabra has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
I do not know any other sailor who has put foot on the island. If somebody tried without official permission would not survive to talk about it. This was one off and was not on our sailing schedule, we just sailed straight in and docked. The complimentary tour buses were waiting on the dock. The only explanation we could think is that we had somebody/s onboard who needed to visit without anybody knowing about it. Or innocently a retired US official was on a cruise and just wanted to see the place. The officers onboard in the know did not devulge a peep.
Your article describes a small forced displacement. While there are suicides', there was not outright murder. The value of "national security" was the justification for deportation and damaging their homelands.
The Americans, like other colonial enterprises, displaced and often murdered the indigenous people who stood in the way of progress. We are modern and hence justified to act against "the other."
What are the Palestinians and the Yemenis teaching the world? Can international law stop genocide?
The countries bringing about a new global order look to the rule of law to be enacted for everyone. The hegemon has so far resisted. Will the hegemon destroy the UN to hold on longer?

Thanks for your comment, very interesting. I had not been aware not seeing any references that visitors were ever allowed there.

Yep. I just read Kit. Another step forward, I hope.
big TQ for this article. the 1814 Treaty: post-Napoleon and a not-so-great reset of Europe's conservative powers at the Congress of Vienna.
Excellent article, thanks. The brits are evil bastards, in the 70s and 80s here in Ireland we witnessed that fact.
Will Diego Garcia be the centre point for ww3? Maybe, maybe not. The centre point for ww3 is and always will be, the square mile of London.
prolly, yes
